Saturday afternoon, from noon to 7 p.m., WHUT airs American Graduate Day 2013, in which communities across the country are asked to help tackle the nation’s dropout crisis.
Sunday talk shows: “Platts Energy Week” (WUSA at 7:30 a.m.) interviews Mike Duncan, chief executive of the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity; Manik Roy of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions; and Victor Der of the Global CCS Institute. “This Week in Defense News” (WUSA at 8) has Air Force Gen. Hawk Carlisle, American University’s Gordon Adams and John T. Bennett of Defense News. “BioCentury This Week” (WUSA at 8:30) features Rep. Michael C. Burgess (R-Tex.), Hogan Lovells’s Charles M. Clapton and Avenue Solutions’ Yvette Fontenot. “Fox News Sunday” (Fox at 9) hosts Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Timothy M. Kaine (D-Va.). “White House Chronicle” (WETA at 9) has WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Joe Mathieu and journalist Robert Whitcomb. “State of the Union” (CNN at 9) features Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.).
“Newsmakers”(C-SPAN at 10) talks to Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. “This Is America & the World” (WETA at 10 and WHUT at 6 p.m.) talks to Muscat Municipality Chairman Sultan bin Hamdoon al Harthy. “Meet the Press” (NBC at 10:30) has Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), former governor Jon Huntsman (R-Utah) and Rep. Raul R. Labrador (R-Idaho). “Bloomberg Government’s Capitol Gains” (Bloomberg TV at 11:30) has Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), Bloomberg’s Peter Gosselin and Alex Wayne and Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Jo White.
To say there’s a lot of new TV on Sunday is an understatement. Broadcast season premieres includes CBS’s “The Amazing Race” (at 8), “The Good Wife” (at 9) and “The Mentalist” (at 10); ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” (at 8) and “Revenge” (at 9); and Fox’s “The Simpsons” (at 8); “Bob’s Burgers” (at 8:30); “Family Guy” (at 9); and “American Dad” (at 9:30).
On cable, “Homeland” (Showtime at 9) is back for Season 3, and “Eastbound & Down” (HBO at 10) returns for its fourth and final season.
In terms of new shows, ABC kicks off prime-time soap “Betrayal” (ABC at 10); critic Hank Stuever says it’s “a sleek but forgettable addition to ABC’s undying belief in the nighttime soap.”
Over on cable, debuts include the comedy “Instant Mom” (Nickelodeon at 8:30); “Masters of Sex” (Showtime at 10); and Stephen Merchant’s “Hello Ladies” (HBO at 10).
And finally, the big finale: “Breaking Bad” (AMC at 9) wraps up its fifth (and final) season.
