TV highlights: CNN’s ‘Black in America’ looks at education

“Dateline” (NBC at 9 p.m.) chronicles the experiences of a family in California trying to avoid foreclosure on their home.

A bride who has cancer appears on “Say Yes to the Dress” (TLC at 9) to find the perfect gown, and she brings three generations of family members to weigh in on the decision. Later, another woman brings her mother as her sole consultant, while another bride-to-be searches for the ideal dress in a shade of pink.

S ERIES PREMIERE: What job hasn’t been explored on a reality show? That’s right — welders. On the new “Alaska Steel Men” (Discovery at 10), the reality-show fixation on Alaska continues; this docu-series follows the adventures of a guy named Dennis Butts, who has a crew of emergency response welders and pipe fitters in the harsh environment of Kodiak. First, the team must delve into icy waters to fix an underwater pipe problem before fishing season.

FINALE WATCH: It’s the second season finale of the time-traveling cop drama “Continuum” (Syfy at 10). Kiera must not only save Alec but try to get herself back home before it’s too late. Meanwhile, Alec has his own problems: He could solve a major issue for Kiera, but it would put him in jeopardy. Cliffhanger? Quite possibly — the Canadian series has been renewed for Season 3.

Soledad O’Brien’s next installment of the series “Black in America” (CNN at 10) is called “Great Expectations.” It looks at the discrepancy in the country’s public school systems. O’Brien explores how education issues specifically relate to African American boys in a low-income part of Minneapolis. Plus: A look at the controversial charter school system.

Style experts Stacy and Clinton have only a limited time left on “What Not to Wear” (TLC at 10), so this time, the duo decides to lay down the law and advise the viewing audience on their top 10 rules of being stylish.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” (NBC at 11:35), along with writer Diablo Cody and musical guest Booker T. Jones with Mayer Hawthorne.
