Some Transformers fans were upset when we showed off a couple of set videos last week, claiming that they were to later include the much-anticipated first big screen appearance of The Dinobots. The fervor came from the fact that neither director Michael Bay nor Paramount have confirmed this team of Autobots for the sequel.
We've been hearing for a while now that these fan-favorite robots will be included in Bay's 2014 adventure, and we seem to now have solid proof confirming that fact. Take a look at this leaked document from Toys R Us, which claims the Dinobots will be the theme of their 2014 toy campaign for the movie, along with a logo that was spotted on a crew member's baseball hat, which shows claw marks slashing their way through the T4 title treatment.
We'd previously heard that the Dinobots might only be appearing in one scene. That may not be the case, though, as Toys R Us is gearing their whole Transformers 4 toy campaign around these beloved characters from the late 80s.
As of now, it's a little hard to imagine exactly how these somewhat outlandish robots will fit into the real-life version of this cartoon and comic book franchise. The Dinobots are Autobots, each with varying origins and abilities. In the animated series, The Dinobots are created on Earth by Wheeljack and Ratchet after the pair are inspired by the discovery of dinosaur bones. In the comic book, they are actual aliens from the planet Cybertron who function as a Special Ops team.
They are the only Autobots with the ability of flight in robot mode, a trait they share with the Decepticons. As of now, they consist of Grimlock (Tyrannosaurus rex), Slag (Triceratops), Sludge (Apatosaurus), Snarl (Stegosaurus), Swoop (Pteranodon) and Paddles (Elasmosaurus), but its not known which of this group of fiercely independent robots will be included in the movie. We may only see Grimlock and Slag, with others to be introduced in future movies. Its also become a long running joke that musician and voice-over artist Mike Patton will be voicing Grimlock. The rumor first started with Danny DeVito many years ago, and continues to be prevalent with this latest sequel.
Another interesting note found in this Toys R Us document is that it confirms 2 more Transformers movies are on the way, and it seems that The Dinobots presence will be quite big throughout this entire new trilogy. We've heard that a Transformers 5 and Transformers 6 were being planned, but this is the first confirmation that we've seen. This could be a franchise that continues on for many more years to come, with the Dinobots being a key part of it.
Transformers 4 isn't the only movie mentioned on this leaked document, though. Its kicked off at the top with news on Star Wars: Episode VII merchandise, confirming that Star Wars: Episode VIII is coming in 2017 and Star Wars: Episode IX is coming in 2019, which lines up with what we've previously heard. Apparently, toys and other merchandise from this new trilogy will be making its in-store appearance sometime in 2014, a whole year before the first movie hits theaters. The listing also confirms what we've heard about an animated Lego Yoda Chronciles TV series coming soon. Will it be released in 2014? We're not sure.
The DreamWorks portion of the document doesn't reveal anything new, but the continuation of the Hasbro line does. According to Toys R Us, merchandise for Stretch Armstrong will be landing on store shelves in April 2014, the proposed release date of the movie. This is one clue that could indicate we're looking at a fake document, though, as the Stretch Armstrong movie is still in development Hell. Maybe the movie isn't coming in April of next year, but its still possible that Hasbro plans to relaunch the toy line in hopes of gearing up anticipation for a future movie, if and when it ever happens. The Ouija movie is also included, though its another project stuck in development, along with Candy Land. Both get TBA release years here, which, like Stretch, likely means they are going to start pushing the toys to get you inspired and anxious for the upcoming movies.
